SEMYO Open Rehearsal Month

Area youth musicians with experience on a string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument are invited to visit a SEMYO rehearsal on one of the following Saturdays: April 10, 17, or 24. Visitors are encouraged to sit-in and play with a SEMYO orchestra, or parents and students may simply observe.  This is a chance to try SEMYO with no cost or obligation and enjoy making music with peers. Rehearsals take place on Saturday mornings at various times between 9 a.m. and noon.  SEMYO has four orchestras suitable for students with a wide range of ability levels. You may choose which orchestra you would like to try, or we will help choose one that is likely the best fit. Samples of the music are available upon request. For questions please contact Corey Henke via e-mail at chenke@semyo.org.

SEMYO Orchestras include:

Bravura Strings – Beginning string orchestra for students who play violin, viola, cello, or bass with 1-2 years of experience.

Chamber Strings – String orchestra for students who play violin, viola, cello or bass with 2 or more years playing experience (or Suzuki grade 3).

Philharmonic Orchestra – Full orchestra for students of all ages on string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. String players typically need a minimum of 3-4 years of experience, wind players 2 or more years of experience.

Concert Orchestra – Southeastern Minnesota’s premier student orchestral ensemble, the Concert Orchestra is a full orchestra experience for advanced students on string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the SEMYO orchestras are divided into smaller ensembles including string as well as wind and percussion ensembles. This is not quite the same experience our members normally have in SEMYO, but it is still an opportunity to get a feel for SEMYO and meet other kids who enjoy playing challenging music. During rehearsals SEMYO is following local and state guidelines to mitigate the spread of COVID. This includes 6 feet of distancing between musicians, required masks, and limiting rehearsals to 60 minutes. Mask are required by all musicians. SEMYO will provide a specialized mask for woodwind and brass players if you do not already have one.

To sign up to visit SEMYO please complete the form below and indicate which date you would like to attend. If you were referred by a current SEMYO member please include their name on the form. Group sizes are limited due to COVID-19 so some dates may fill up.
