Century High School,
2525 Viola Road NE,

Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras invites you to our spring concert titled Storm and Dance on Sunday, May 19 in the Century High School auditorium.

Storm and Dance will be presented in two parts:

2 PM: Bravura Strings, Prelude Winds, & Chamber Strings

3:30 PM: Philharmonic Orchestra & Concert Orchestra

The concert will feature all five orchestras with performances of original and arranged works. Highlights will include:

  • An arrangement of Bizet’s Farandole for full orchestra featuring Chamber Strings with select Prelude Winds students.
  • The world premiere of Alpenglow composed by the first ever SEMYO Polaris Composition contest winner Blake Zimmerli, a senior at Austin High School.
  • Concerto Competition winner Ramón Campos in a performance of Bael Shem for solo violin and orchestra by Ernest Bloch.
  • Student conductors Briar Daire and Edra Clements will lead works performed by the Concert Orchestra.

SEMYO will also welcome singers from Bella Voce and Bella Fiore from Sing Out Loud to perform with the advanced Concert Orchestra in a combined orchestra and choral performance of Finlandia, a tone poem by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius.

Finlandia will be conducted by Edra Clements who is a member of both SEMYO and Bella Voce. While the work is most often performed with orchestra alone, Sibelius later re-worked the melody into a stand-alone piece titled the Finlandia Hymn, a patriotic ode to his home country that can be sung alone or combined with the original orchestration. The combined forces on Sibelius’ beautiful melody will create a stunning finish to the concert and SEMYO 2023-2024 season!

Admission to the concert is a goodwill donation (suggested $10 for adults) and doors open at 1:30 PM. Audience members may attend either one or both portions of the concert. Donations can be made at the concert or online ahead of time.

Storm and Dance is graciously sponsored by Arlene Schuman, realtor for REMAX Results, Schmitt Music, GLK Orthodontics, and Olmsted Medical Center.
