Explore Music with SEMYO this Summer

Session 1: June 10-14, 2019
Session 2: July 15-19, 2019

SEMYO will once again partner with Rochester Community Education to offer a variety of summer music camps for students who play string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. No previous membership in SEMYO is required. Please scroll down for descriptions and links to registration for each camp. For questions contact camp@semyo.org or call 507-282-1718. All camps take place at Century High School – 2525 Viola Rd NE, Rochester.

The cost for each camp is $110 for the week. If financial assistance is needed to participate families may apply for a scholarship. The form is below.

Session 1 – June 10-14

Fiddle Strings Camp (Gr. 7 and Up)

Time: 9 a.m. to Noon

Taught by Zack Kline

Join in the fiddle jam! Learn a variety of fiddle styles and tunes in this ensemble playing experience. This camp is open to students who play violin, viola, and cello. Instructor Zack Kline is a Twin Cities area multi-instrumentalist who specializes in playing the fiddle and performs professionally in The Orange Mighty Trio. Music will be sent electronically to the students before the camp starts. There will be a short performance on the last day of camp. Playing level: For students with at least one year middle school playing experience or Suzuki book level 3 through advanced level. Students in grades 4-6 may participate with special permission (contact Corey Henke).

Middle School Jazz Band Camp (Gr. 7-9)

Time: 9 a.m. to Noon

Taught by Levi Kimmet

Learn jazz style, technique, and improvisation while rehearsing and performing in a jazz band. The camp is open to students starting grades 7-9 in the fall with at least one year playing experience on any band instrument. Students with experience on piano, bass, or guitar are also invited to register. Music will be sent electronically to the students before camp starts. There will be a short performance on the last day of camp.

High School Jazz Band Camp (Gr. 9-12)

Time: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Taught by Levi Kimmet

Learn jazz style, technique, and improvisation while rehearsing and performing in a jazz band. The camp is open to students going into grades 10-12 or who have four or more years of experience on any band instrument. Students with experience on piano, bass, or guitar also invited to register. Levi Kimmet will return as the instructor for this jazz camp. Music will be sent electronically to the students before camp starts. There will be a short performance on the last day of camp.

Session 2 – July 15-19

Prelude Strings Orchestra Camp (Gr. 7 and up)

Time: 9 a.m. to Noon

Taught by James Buchan

Rosin your bows — you are invited! Violinists, cellists, violists, and bassists, come play in a string orchestra! If you are a student musician and want to try this experience or continue to improve your musical skills, either way – you will have fun! James Buchan will be your maestro for this camp. Music will be sent electronically to the students before camp starts. There will be a short performance on the last day of camp. Playing level: For students with at least one year middle school playing experience or Suzuki book level 3. Students in grades 4-6 may participate with special permission (contact Corey Henke).

Summer Band Camp (Gr. 7 and Up)

Time: 9 a.m. to Noon

Taught by Ryan Anderson

Clean out your spit valves, soak your reed, and loosen up your lips — band members wanted! If you are a student wind, brass, or percussion musician and want to experience playing in a band or continue improving your skills, either way – you will have fun! Ryan Anderson, Dover-Eyota Public Schools music teacher, will be the instructor for this band camp. Music will be sent electronically to the students before camp starts. There will be a short performance on the last day of camp. Playing level: For students with at least one year playing experience on any band instrument. The camp is primarily for middle school students, but high school students also welcome to register.

Advanced String Camp (Gr. 9-12)

Time: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Taught by James Buchan

Intermediate and advanced string students who play violin, viola, cello, and bass are invited to attend a week-long string orchestra camp. Students will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform original works for string orchestra and perform a short concert on the last day. The camp will be taught by James Buchan who holds a music degree from Indiana University and previously performed violin with the New World Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic. The Music will be sent electronically to the students before the camp starts. Playing level: For intermediate and advance string students starting grades 9-12 in the fall. Advanced string students in grades 7-8 may participate with special permission (contact Corey Henke).
